How many years do you need to live in Spain before applying for Spanish citizenship? The answer depends on your nationality and personal circumstances.
As a general rule, Spanish citizenship by residence requires 10 years of legal, continuous residence immediately before the application. However, Spanish law provides reduced periods of 5, 2 and even 1 year in specific cases.
What is Spanish citizenship by residence?
Citizenship by residence is one of the routes to acquire Spanish nationality. The main residence periods are established in Article 22 of the Spanish Civil Code. Physical presence in Spain alone is not enough: residence must generally be legal, continuous and immediately prior to the application.
10 years: the general rule
The general residence period is 10 years when the applicant does not fall within one of the special categories entitled to a shorter period.
5 years: recognised refugees
The period is reduced to 5 years for people who have obtained refugee status in Spain. This should be distinguished from other forms of international or temporary protection, which do not necessarily have the same effects for nationality purposes.
2 years: nationals of certain countries
A reduced period of 2 years applies to nationals by origin of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea and Portugal, as well as persons of Sephardic origin, provided the other legal requirements are met.
When can 1 year be enough?
Spanish law provides a 1-year residence period in certain specific circumstances, including some cases involving birth in Spain, marriage to a Spanish citizen, Spanish ancestry and other situations expressly established by law.
Does marrying a Spanish citizen automatically give you citizenship?
No. Marriage to a Spanish citizen does not automatically grant Spanish nationality. A person who, at the time of applying, has been married to a Spanish citizen for at least one year and is not legally or de facto separated may benefit from the reduced 1-year residence period, subject to the remaining requirements.
Does time in Spain as a student count?
A stay for study purposes should not automatically be treated as residence for Spanish citizenship purposes. Someone may therefore have physically lived in Spain for several years while having a shorter period that counts towards nationality by residence.
Does residence have to be continuous?
Yes. The Civil Code requires legal, continuous residence immediately prior to the application. Trips abroad do not necessarily prevent an application, but their length, frequency and circumstances may be relevant. Long or repeated absences should be reviewed before filing.
Other requirements for Spanish citizenship
Completing the required residence period does not guarantee citizenship. Applicants must also satisfy the other legal requirements, including good civic conduct and a sufficient degree of integration into Spanish society. Depending on the case, CCSE and/or DELE examinations and supporting documentation may also be relevant.
Quick guide: residence periods
- 10 years — general rule.
- 5 years — recognised refugees.
- 2 years — nationals by origin of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea and Portugal, and persons of Sephardic origin.
- 1 year — specific cases expressly provided by law.
Frequently asked questions
How long do I need to live in Spain for citizenship? Generally 10 years, although reduced periods of 5, 2 or 1 year apply in certain cases.
Can I apply after 2 years? Yes, if you fall within a category entitled to the two-year period and meet the remaining requirements.

From what date are the years counted? This depends on your immigration history and legal status. Not every period of physical presence in Spain necessarily counts as qualifying residence.
