Temporary protection for Ukrainians in Spain until March 2028: residence options
Temporary protection for Ukrainians is extended to 4 March 2028. Learn which residence routes may be considered in Spain and what documents to review.
Temporary protection for people displaced from Ukraine has been extended in the European Union until 4 March 2028. Anyone planning to remain in Spain longer term should review possible residence routes well before temporary protection ends.
How long does temporary protection for Ukrainians last?
Council Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/1912 of 30 July 2026 extends temporary protection until 4 March 2028. Earlier references to March 2027 are therefore no longer current.
Can you move to another residence status from Spain?
Spanish rules introduced in 2026 allow holders of temporary protection to apply for stay or residence authorisations whose procedure can legally be initiated from within Spain. The change is not automatic: the requirements of the chosen route must still be met.
Additional Provision 19 of the Spanish Immigration Regulations does not by itself create a general route for switching from temporary protection and does not expressly include the arraigo authorisations in Article 125. Its text refers the conditions and procedure for changing status to a ministerial order. Before considering any change of status, the special rules in force and the compatibility of the specific authorisation must therefore be checked. Temporary protection should not be surrendered without first assessing the consequences.
Which residence options may be considered?
Depending on individual circumstances, possible routes may include study authorisations, certain employment or professional routes, international teleworker residence, authorisations under Law 14/2013 and relevant family-based regimes. The appropriate option depends on employment, income, family circumstances, studies and documentation.
What should be checked in advance?
It is advisable to review passport and TIE validity, registration in Spain, employment history or contract, financial means, criminal-record requirements, healthcare or insurance requirements and family documents. It is also essential to confirm that the selected procedure can be initiated from Spain.
Temporary protection, TIE and ordinary residence are different
Temporary protection is a specific EU protection regime. The TIE is the physical foreigner identity card evidencing an administrative status. An ordinary residence authorisation has a separate legal basis and requires its own application.
When should you start preparing?
Although temporary protection now runs until March 2028, it is sensible not to leave route selection until the final months. Early planning makes it easier to prepare documents and reduce the risk of gaps in status.
