NIE vs TIE in Spain: What Is the Difference?
The NIE is a personal identification number for a foreign national and does not itself grant residence. The TIE is the physical card issued for certain residence or stay statuses and displays the holder’s NIE.
Quick answer
NIE and TIE are not the same. The NIE is the foreigner’s unique identification number; the TIE is the physical card evidencing the administrative status where a card is required, and it displays the holder’s NIE.
Who may qualify
- A NIE identifies foreigners with economic, professional or social links to Spain when administrative identification is required.
- A TIE is issued to foreigners holding an authorisation or status for which the rules require a physical card.
Main requirements
- For a NIE, the ground and documents depend on why the number is being assigned or requested.
- For a TIE, the qualifying residence/stay status must exist first.
- Many TIE procedures require an in-person police appointment and fingerprints.
Documents
- For NIE: EX-15 form, passport and evidence of the ground where required.
- For TIE: EX-17 form, passport, decision/evidence of status and category-specific documents.
- Photograph and fee receipt where applicable.
How the procedure works
- Determine whether only a NIE number is needed or a physical TIE is required.
- A NIE may be assigned within another immigration procedure or requested separately where a valid ground exists.
- A TIE is issued after the corresponding authorisation/status through the applicable police procedure.
Frequently asked questions
Does having a NIE mean I am resident in Spain?
No. A NIE is an identification number and does not by itself grant a right to reside or work in Spain.
Do the TIE and NIE have the same number?
The TIE displays the holder’s NIE, but the TIE is the physical document and the NIE is the identification number.
