Non-Lucrative Visa and Residence in Spain

The Spanish non-lucrative route is intended for third-country nationals who want to reside in Spain without carrying out employment or professional activity. For an initial application from abroad, the residence-visa application is lodged through the competent Spanish consulate and also entails the application for the non-lucrative temporary residence authorisation.

Quick answer

Non-lucrative residence allows a person to live in Spain without carrying out employment or professional activity. The initial application requires sufficient financial means, health insurance and compliance with the other requirements in force.

Who may qualify

  • Third-country nationals wishing to live in Spain without working.
  • Applicants with stable and sufficient resources for themselves and, where applicable, accompanying family members.
  • Families applying together where each applicant meets the relevant conditions.

Main requirements

  • Financial means: 400% of the monthly IPREM for the main applicant plus 100% of IPREM for each accompanying family member.
  • Public or private health insurance with an insurer authorised to operate in Spain.
  • Compliance with the criminal-record and public-health requirements established by the applicable rules.

Documents

  • EX-01 form and a valid passport or travel document.
  • Evidence of sufficient financial resources.
  • Health insurance, criminal-record certificate and medical certificate; family applications also require proof of relationship.
  • Foreign public documents may need apostille/legalisation and Spanish translation depending on the issuing country and document.

How the procedure works

  • The initial application is normally lodged through the competent Spanish consular office for the applicant’s place of residence.
  • After approval and visa issuance, the applicant enters Spain within the visa validity period.
  • The initial authorisation is valid for one year from entry; the TIE must then be requested within the applicable time limit.

Non-Lucrative Visa Spain

Application, arrival in Spain and renewal

The initial visa/residence application and the later renewal are different stages. Planning both from the beginning helps avoid problems with documents, financial evidence, insurance and residence requirements.

1. Check eligibility and financial means

The route is for third-country nationals who want to reside in Spain without carrying out employment or professional activity. The applicant must show sufficient financial means and meet the other residence requirements.

2. Prepare the consular application

The initial procedure is normally started through the Spanish consular office competent for the applicant’s place of residence. Typical evidence includes passport documentation, financial means, health insurance, criminal-record and medical certificates, plus family documents where applicable.

3. Enter Spain and obtain the TIE

After approval and visa issuance, the applicant enters Spain within the permitted period. The initial authorisation is valid for one year from entry and the TIE must be requested after arrival within the applicable deadline.

4. Prepare renewal before expiry

Renewal is a separate procedure. It should normally be filed during the two months before the permit expires. The current rules require continued financial means and health insurance and also include a real-and-effective residence requirement in Spain.

EX-01 form in English: what each section asks for

EX-01 is the official Spanish application form for initial or renewed non-lucrative temporary residence. The official form is in Spanish; this English explanation helps you identify its sections, but you should complete and submit the official form.

  • Applicant: passport or NIE, personal details, address and contact details.
  • Family member providing funds: complete this section when the financial resources belong to a family member.
  • Representative: details of a representative submitting the application, if applicable.
  • Notifications: the address and contact details used for official notices.
  • Type of authorisation: select initial residence or renewal, and indicate whether the applicant holds the funds or is a family member of the holder.

Download the official EX-01 form (Spanish PDF). Check the relevant consulate’s instructions for an initial application; renewals follow a different filing procedure.

Renewal point to check early

Under the current regulation, renewal includes the requirement to have resided genuinely and effectively in Spain for more than 183 days during the calendar year. Individual circumstances should therefore be reviewed before the renewal window opens.
